Lesson #2: The Father of Ginsberg’s “Lost America of Love” and Spain’s Revolutionary Lover: The Lives and Poetry of Walt Whitman and Federico García Lorca

Subject

Allen Ginsberg, Walt Whitman, Federico Garcia Lorca, revolutionary poets, "I Sing the Body Electric", "Lamentation of Ignacio Sanchez Mejias" high school, lesson plans

Description

This is the second lesson plan of the mini-unit I have created on Ginsberg's poem "A Supermarket in California." The lesson described is geared towards helping students see how Ginsberg invokes Whitman and Lorca in "A Supermarket in California", because he is seeking the guidance and support of these previous revolutionary poets in attempting to create a more socially accepting society through his poetry. Ginsberg does so, because he sees Whitman and Lorca as role models for using poetry to create social change as they both defended marginalized groups of their own cultures and eras in their poetry and personal lives.
